Huntsmen World Senior Games

October 6-11, 2010 St. George, UT

By Jim "Makevery" Schatz

The Huntsman takes place every year in St. George, Utah, around the beginning of October.  This is the premium senior athletic event that seniors, all over the world, look forward to every year.  10,000 senior athletes and approximately 15,000 visitors came this year to have fun and compete in 26 different sports.  The real story is that those athletes and their guests bring into the St. George community over 13 million dollars every year.

The Huntsman World Senior Games was founded in 1987on the principles of connecting through sports for peace, friendship and an active life style.  The major sponsor is the Huntsman Corporation.  The Huntsman Corporation, located in St. George, is one of the world's largest chemical companies.

Every year 2,000 local volunteers make sure everyone feels at home and every thing runs smoothly.  It seems like the results are in their local papers almost as fast as the events are concluded.  Everything is so amazingly organized.

A group of us, NBSA founders and members, came specifically for the basketball shooting events. It seemed like every top senior shooter in the world was there.  They held the hot shot competition on Saturday and the free throw and three point on Monday.  The 3 on 3, half court, started on Thursday and finished on Saturday.  There was also a full court senior 5 on 5, which started on Tuesday.

The hot shot is a 60 second event where you score from different positions on the court.  It helps to be able to make the 3 point shot in order to excel in the hot shot.  The new record for the Huntsman hot shot is 61.
The free throw/3 point competition combines 3 point shooting with the free throw score.  Shooters get 25 free throws and six three point shots.   43 is a perfect score in the free throw/3 point competition.

Each sport was very well represented.  The best senior athletes were competing in their respective age groups - 450 tennis players, 1000 plus softball players, 500 plus basketball players, and volleyball holds their Global Senior Cup, etc.

Next year it has been suggested that we hold our annual NBSA Senior Free Throw National Championship there in addition to the other traditional basketball events.  This would be an age division championship with all the winners, both men and women, where those who shoot 92% or better going into the open division to determine the national open senior champion.
